Extirpationally speaking

New word for the day: extirpate. Dictionary.com defines it as "to remove or destroy totally" and "to pull up by or as if by the roots," as in "to extirpate an unwanted hair."

Now, I'm sure I've read and heard this word before, but it really stuck with me today when Katty Kay (filling in for Diane Rehm) was interviewing Zbigniew Brzezinski, and he used that word (I think in terms of eradicating terrorism). And now, reading that definition with the reference to unwanted hair, I'm inspired to work it into my daily conversations. Except, I don't have very many of those, these days, since I spend so much time working on my own.

Maybe I can weave it into conversations with the GF:
Her: "You've got some stubble there on your upper lip."
Me: "Yeah, I need to extirpate those little buggers."
Her: "Whatever, they tickle."
