Genetic Traits

Okay, so my sister's comment on my post about Fear got me wondering: what other traits are just in my DNA? Here's my start at the list:
  1. Crying. We've established that we're a weepy bunch.
  2. Fear of the dark. Well, not so much the dark itself, but what might be hiding in the dark. As a small child, I believed I could see ghostlike wraiths in the semi-darkness of our bedroom at night. (Of course, this fear may be less nature than nurture, since we all would stay up and watch scary movies.) And after seeing Cronenberg's The Fly in the theatre, I didn't sleep for more than a few minutes at a time for nearly a week, which reminded me of when Middle Sister saw Alien. Her lying awake staring at the ceiling freaked me out!
  3. Fear of trying new things. We're a very brave bunch about many things, particularly the day-to-day hard stuff. But brand new adventures? Oh, some of us may do that stuff, but trust me, we're often scared out of our wits.
  4. Smarts. We're a smart bunch who like learning new things. This also can make us into know-it-alls, at times, but hey, sometimes you need that person you can ask how to spell stuff or what the latest word is on stem cell research, right?
  5. Tendency toward depression and anxiety, usually well controlled and channeled in healthy directions. (See number 3, above.)
  6. Artistic. Maybe we don't really spend a lot of time on artistic pursuits, but we have the ability.
  7. Appreciators of music. Okay, so I change key in mid-stream, but I'm having fun, right? (This could also be more nurture, but I like to think it's an interesting combination of parental DNA.)
  8. Writing. Am I just getting around to that? All three sisters are excellent writers, which may have something to do with
  9. Reading. We read. A lot. Everything in sight. (See "know-it-all" above.) Breakfast used to involve the dispersal of reading material--one gets the milk carton, one gets the cereal box...
  10. Cute little noses. We've got 'em.
  11. Teeth. This was handed down selectively: the two younger sisters got Mom's healthy if buck teeth, whilst the eldest got the straight-but-not-so-strong teeth. Apparently, DNA cannot be mixed when it comes to teeth. Go figure.
  12. Skin. This, too, was selective: Middle Sister gets the olive complexion, whilst Eldest and Youngest are paler than pale. Any geneticists out there want to explain this?
  13. Sarcasm. Nature? Nurture? Hmmmm...

You had to bring up "Alien". Did you know that I didn't stop sleeping with my head under the covers at night until I was 21? Thank E.A.Poe and Stephan King for that.
Yes, we are incredibly brave on a daily basis when we have to be. It's when we have a choice that we turn into weenies.
Know-It-All's? We are the Queens of sometimes useless knowledge. Like a crow collecting shiny objects, we save tidbits of information for a later date.
Yeah, our emotions swing with the tide. Keeps us from being boring.
Music ability..don't ask us to sing, but we played our horns with passion and some finesse. So somehow, we got Dad's musical ability combined with Mom's singing style. "Don't sing the kids lullabies, you'll give them nightmares." I'm going with wierd parental DNA on that one.
Yes, we could write our way out of almost any school assignment.
Reading, that's a Mom thing. I have been known to read the yellow pages when stuck in a boring motel room.
I never thought of my nose as cute, I got caught in a DNA crosswind on that one I think. Dad's nose at the top, Mom's cuteness at the end. You got the Mom cute edition there.
My sons are kinda lucky...they got the good teeth from me, with their Dad's better alignment. They are split on noses, Frank has the Mom nose.
I will agree on the skin thing...you and elder sis have the peaches and cream skin from Dad, I got the darker skin from Mom. How I envied you both when I was younger. Luckily, we all got that anti-aging gene from Mom...Damn we look good!
I'm not touching the scarasm thing, nope.
I've spent 30 years breeding dogs, dealing with the genetics of health, temperment, and appearance. I'm in over my head on this one.
