Thanks for the Book Recommendations

Here's some fiction I snuck in when I should have been writing. Or at least re-reading archival texts.

Lucky in the Corner by Carol Anshaw. A fascinating study of a mother and a daughter. I appreciate the careful presentation of character, how details unfold in unspectacular but interesting ways. While Anshaw sometimes gets a bit too wound up in those details (some descriptions feel overwrought), I highly recommend this book. Plus, the dog (Lucky) plays an important role. And I like books with and/or about dogs. Thanks to Dr. Write for this recommendation.

In that vein, Connie Wills's To Say Nothing of the Dog is charming, witty, and intellectually challenging, and features a wonderful dog named Cyril who's quite tolerant of the cat (who plays an important role in the plot and in history as we know it). The inimitable cgb recommended this after hearing about my fascination with time travel narratives, and I'm sure I'll be reading this book again.

Meanwhile, The Time-Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger awaits, sitting patiently on my bookshelf. I think I've used up my fiction allotment for several weeks...
