Because this is a fun meme that lots of my fellow blogsters are enjoying:

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 123.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
  5. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.
"You can stand outside the student union and stop people as they come and go, or you can hand out your survey to groups of people and collect them when the participants have finished."
Bruce Ballenger, The Curious Researcher 4th ed.

Yup, my Writing 205 (Critical Research) materials were closest to hand. Oddly enough, students from this class are putting together pilot field studies for next Tuesday's class!

"Figure 7.13 Search Query Using Parentheses. Query: women OR female AND 'equal opportunities' OR discrimination."
Seriously. That's page 123 of Sally Rumsey, How to Find Information: A Guide for Researchers.

"And the educational system, claiming a monopoly over the consecration of works of the past and over the production and consecration (through diplomas) of cultural consumers, only posthumously accords that infallible mark of consecration, the elevation of works into 'classics' by their inclusion in curricula."
Pierre Bourdieu, The Field of Cultural Production

As I noted on Former Native Speaker's blog, I've done this meme a few times, and I never have a fabulous book near to hand. In fact, were I to recreate this again , I'd have to be honest and point out that at my left hand is the March issue of InStyle magazine. And page 123 is an ad for Dillard's department store with virtually no text. I could describe her shoes--would that count? ;)

So, aerobil, I'm jealous. The good news: I'm beating you big time at Scrabble right now!
